On April 3 at the Chania Chamber of Commerce and Industry in Crete, a workshop focused on gastronomy, tourism, and branding featured welcoming remarks from the Chamber’s president, Ioannis Margaronis, followed by discussions by food editor Harry Tzanis of FnL-guide.com and brand strategist Dimosthenis Broussalis of Dasc Branding.
In his very interesting discussion about gastronomy and tourism—a subject that comes up almost every time I hear Greeks discussing olive oil in public forums–Harry Tzanis discussed the many elements of gastrotourism (also known as culinary tourism and food tourism). These include traditional products, cuisine, tradition, culture, museums, and ways of connecting tourists with producers. Tzanis emphasized the importance of offering tourists excellent bottled and branded extra virgin olive oil in restaurants, along with the traditional cuisine for which Greece is world famous.
Dimosthenis Broussalis talked about branding. He said that if you don’t tell your story, someone else will tell it, and probably not the way you want it told. He suggested that if all the 20 million adults who visit Greece each year took home just one liter of olive oil, that would be an easy way to take care of 16% of Greece’s olive oil exports. Greeks have wonderful opportunities for branding that can emphasize what they are, what they have, what they make with local products that are unique where they are, products tied to the place and its people, tradition, culture, images and experiences. Greeks should promote that—and visitors should appreciate it and buy Greek products!
